10 amazing places you must visit in Iceland
Are you ready for your Iceland road trip?
I’m lucky enough to have been to Iceland twice – once in autumn and once in winter. So I figured I would create a list of 10 of my favourite places you must visit in Iceland to make the planning easier for you. Here are some of the best places in Iceland that I’ve been to during both of my road trips.

1. Reykjavík
No matter where your Iceland trip takes you, you will probably visit Reykjavik at some point. Because, you know, the airport is close-by and Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland. For the best views, make sure you go to the Hallgrímskirkja church. The view in autumn was pretty spectacular with the mix of the beautiful orange autumn leaves, the pretty little Icelandic homes and the Atlantic ocean in the background.
2. Thingvellir / Þingvellir National Park
Thingvellir is a national park just about 40km outside Reykjavik. It is very easily accessible from the capital. It is known for its incredible landscapes, waterfalls and geology. Additionally, is part of the Golden Circle sightseeing route.
3. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
Jokulsarlon is certainly one of the places you must visit in Iceland, and I am lucky enough to have seen it twice. It is a large glacier lake in southern Iceland where you can see beautiful blue icebergs floating in water. It is unlike any other place that I have seen in the world. Go see the beautiful blue icebergs floating through its waters. It should be a top priority on your bucket list.
4. Aldeyjarfoss
Aldeyjarfoss is one of those places you must visit in Iceland. When we stopped at Aldeyjarfoss, I didn’t realise it was going to take about 3h to get to the waterfall and back. If you go there in the winter, be prepared to hike through lots of snow going up and down a few hills to get to this beauty. But, you know what – I think it’s worth the hike!
5. Vík
The beautiful Vik church is located on top of a hill, so a good photo of it is pretty much guaranteed. Don’t forget to bring your warmest jacket with you though because it gets very windy on the coast in Vik. See the massive waves in the first two photos.
6. Goðafoss
Godafoss is one of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland. So it is great for long exposure photography. It is located in northern Iceland, about 30 minute drive from Akureyri. See what equipment I used to take this photo here!
7. Kerið crater
Kerid is another great place to visit in Iceland, located at the Golden circle. It is a 3000 year old volcanic crater lake that you can walk around.
8. Skógafoss
When visiting Iceland, don’t forget to visit Skogafoss. It is one of the biggest waterfalls and one of the most popular places to visit in Iceland. It is 60m high and 15m wide. You can enjoy from the top as well.
9. Stykkishólmur
Make sure you also visit the smaller towns in Iceland. Stykkisholmur is a small town at the Snæfellsnes peninsula. It is a great place for peaceful walks to the lighthouse or along the harbour.
10. Selvallafoss aka Sheep’s Waterfall
Sheep’s waterfall is a bit of a hidden gem because you cannot see it from the road and it just doesn’t seem like a busy car park. That’s because you don’t know what there is to see at this stop until you walk about 100 metres and actually see this beauty. It is one of those waterfalls you can walk behind and enjoy a bit of water splashing and getting you wet. I went behind it in autumn, but did not dare do it during the winter trip. It just looked too slippery and freezing to me.I think it is one of the places you must see in Iceland anyway.
